*Pakistan’s Leap into the 5G Era: A Race Towards the Digital Horizon**
Written by Irfan Tariq
Pakistan has entered a new chapter in its digital journey. On **March 10, 2026**, the **Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA)** began the auction for 5G spectrum, a moment that is more than a technical process—it is a step towards shaping the country’s digital future.
The nation’s leading telecom companies, **Jazz, Zong, and Ufone**, stepped into this arena with determination. Each submitted a **$15 million bank guarantee**, signaling both serious investment and the fierce competition ahead. The government offered **600 MHz of spectrum** across multiple frequency bands, including the globally essential **3500 MHz band**. Early rounds revealed an intense rivalry between Jazz and Zong, while Ufone moved with caution. As this is a multi-round auction, the final winner will only be revealed over time.
At the inauguration, **Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja** and **PTA Chairman Hafeez ur Rehman** emphasized that 5G is not just about faster internet. It is a vital link in realizing the dream of a **Digital Pakistan**. The rollout will begin in major cities such as **Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, and Quetta**, and gradually expand across the country. Experts believe that 5G speeds in Pakistan could initially reach **100–300 Mbps**, and eventually rise to **1 Gbps**, compared to current 4G speeds of **10–40 Mbps**. This leap promises to transform education, commerce, business, and urban life.
Globally, the 5G race started when **South Korea** became the first country to launch commercial 5G on **April 3, 2019**, led by **SK Telecom, KT Corporation, and LG Uplus**, narrowly beating the United States. The technology spread rapidly to **China, Japan, Germany**, and more than **70 countries**, powering smart cities, autonomous vehicles, artificial intelligence, and advanced online services.
Even as the world embraces 5G, the horizon already gleams with **6G**. Leading nations are experimenting and preparing for this next frontier. China has sent experimental satellites and is leading research through **Huawei** and the **China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation**. South Korea aims for a 2030 launch with **Samsung Electronics** at the forefront, while the United States advances research through **Qualcomm, Nokia, and Ericsson**. With projected speeds exceeding **100 Gbps**, 6G promises a world almost 100 times faster than 5G—a glimpse of the future that is already taking shape.
This journey of technology is like a caravan racing across the horizon. Yesterday, the world moved under the shadow of 4G. Today, it feels the speed of 5G. Tomorrow, the light of 6G is already shining from afar. Pakistan stands at the gateway of this revolution, Jazz and Zong locked in a fierce contest, and the country preparing to claim its place in the global digital race.
In the end, only time will tell who will wear the crown of Pakistan’s 5G revolution. But one thing is certain: this race is not just about speed—it is about **shaping the nation’s digital destiny**.Written by
